Epoca de aur a aviatiei a creat idoli in fiecare tara. Romania a avut unul special, inginer, proiectant, constructor si pilot: AUREL VLAICU.

AUREL VLAICU (19 noiembrie 1882 – 13 septembrie 1913) s-a nascut in satul Bintinti jud. Hunedora.

Si-a facut studiile liceale la Orastie si si-a luat bacalaureatul la Sibiu (1902).

Si-a continuat studiile ingineresti la Budapesta si apoi la Munchen, in Germania, obtinandu-si diploma de inginer in 1907.

Pentru o perioada, lucreaza ca inginer la uzinele Opel Russelheim.

In 1908 se intoarce la Bintinti si incepe construirea unui planor cu care efectueaza un numar de zboruri in 1909. In toamna anului 1909 se muta la Bucuresti si incepe construirea primului sau avion Vlaicu I, la Arsenalul Armatei. Avionul zboara fara modificari (lucru unic pentru inceputurile aviatiei mondiale) in iunie 1910.

In 1911 construieste un al doilea avion, Vlaicu II, care era deosebit de bine construit, extreme de stabil si foarte manevrabil la aceea vreme. Cu acest avion, a castigat in 1912 doua premii I memorabile (la probele de aterizare la punct fix si aruncarea la tinta a unui proiectil) la mitingul aerian de la Aspern, Austria.

In 1912-1913, a proiectat avionul Vlaicu III, primul avion de constructie metalica din lume care a fost finalizat de colaboratorii sai, C. Silisteanu si G. Magnani.

Prin intreaga sa activitate, AUREL VLAICU a dat nastere viselor romanilor de a zbura si va ramane pentru romani, “…mitul fundamental, reprezentativ al istoriei noastre, care ne-a cerut mereu jertfe pentru ca sa putem dura peste vrajmasiile vremurilor…”(Ion Dodu Balan).

AUREL VLAICU (19 november 1882 – 13 september 1913) was born in the village Bintinti, Hunedoara County.

He attended the high school courses in Orastie and was graduated in Sibiu 1907.

He went on with his engineering studies at the University of Budapest and then in Munich, Germany, getting his engineer graduation in 1907.

After the graduation, he worked for a while at Opel Russelheim Enterprises.

In 1908 Aurel Vlaicu came back to Bintinti and built a glider with which he achieved to operate a number of flights in 1909. In the autumn of 1909 he came to Bucharest and began the construction of his first airplane Vlaicu I at the Army Arsenal. This airplane achieved to fly without any modification (a unique situation for the world aviation beginning) in 1910.

In 1911 he built a second airplane Vlaicu II, which was extremely well achieved, with great stability and easy manoeuvrability for that time. With this plane, he won two memorable I prizes (in landing in a fixed point competition and in throwing a missile to a target) at the air meeting in Aspern, Austria.

In 1912-1913, he designed the airplane Vlaicu III, the first airplane of metal construction in the world, that was finished by his coworkers C. Silisteanu and G. Magnani.

By his entire activity, AUREL VLAICU gave birth to the flying dreams of Romanian people and he will remain for them “…the fundamental myth, representative for our history, that has always asked sacrifices to leave us last over the enmities of the times” (Ion Dodu Balan).
